When the flute sings, spin becomes a cloud
Chatter is a vibration the cutter lost. On a hitting surface it prints a washboard. A ball reads that washboard as launch scatter, not as a “milled look.”

Chatter is a vibration the cutter lost. On a hitting surface it prints a washboard. A ball reads that washboard as launch scatter, not as a “milled look.”
You can hear a bad pass from the rubber strip. The spindle note goes from a hiss to a vowel. Keiko does not finish the row to save a minute. She drops feed, or she aborts and rewrites the stepover. That reflex is the whole shop, compressed. A pretty scallop pattern that rings while it is being cut is a face that will launch two different balls in two different windows. Golfers experience this as “the 7 is hot today” and then “the 7 is dead.” It is often the same 7. The surface has a periodic ridge the eye misses and the ball does not.
Chatter has ordinary causes on a small CNC bed. A vise that picked up the hosel instead of the window. A stick-out that turned the flute into a tuning fork. A cavity that is thin in one pocket and thick in another, so the cutter is in and out of a hard spot every revolution. A feed that looked fine in CAM on a 17-4 coupon and then met a 304 stamp. Soft jaws help. An indicator sweep helps. None of that replaces a machinist who is willing to look stupid by stopping a pass that a customer is watching through the window. Pride is how you ship a washboard.
There is a fashion for ball-nose “billet” faces. The scallops are even, the photo is lovely, and from a wet lie the first land the ball meets is a ridge that may or may not be square to the path. We have hit enough balls off the soaked tray to be done with that argument. Square-end, modest stepover, scallop height low enough that a rain-soaked ball sees a plane. If you want jewelry, engrave the cavity. Do not engrave the window with a tool that is also a musical instrument.
Spin scatter is the name we use when the Ra sled says the finish is fine and the wet tray says the shots are a cloud. The sled averages. The ball does not. A periodic mark at a millimeter scale will throw start-line and height in a way a random roughness of the same Ra will not. That is why Nia still looks with a loupe after the sled. The coupon tin on her shelf is a calibration object, not a substitute for the face in the vise. If she sees a washboard, the head goes back to CAM. The ticket waits. The golfer waits. Waiting is cheaper than a set that only behaves on Tuesdays.
If you hear the vowel while you are standing on the rubber, you are allowed to look alarmed. We would rather you see us kill a pass than see us shrug and call it texture. Texture that rings is chatter. Chatter is a defect. Defects scatter spin. That chain is the only sermon this mill gives, and it is shorter than a fitting script because the spindle either sounds right or it does not.
Bring the head. Watch if you want. If we abort, you still have metal, and you have a shop that likes sleep more than a photograph. The flute will try again at a feed it can defend. That is the whole note.
